Contemporary Museum of Calligraphy

The Contemporary museum of calligraphy opened in Moscow turned out to be the most heartwarming cultural event of the year.

The Contemporary Museum of Calligraphy is a place of magical atmosphere and beauty

The Contemporary museum of calligraphy is the first museum in Russia, dedicated to the art of handwriting.

Recently it became an institutional member of the International council of museums (ICOM).

Our mission is to form a beautiful and healthy society. The museum was initiated by MVK International Exhibition Company, the National Union of Calligraphers and Sokolniki Exhibition Centre. All across the world, including Turkey, China, Japan and UAE, there are the museums displaying permanent calligraphy expositions. However, there were no such museums in Russia yet. The Museum was officially opened on August 14, 2008.

The Museum exposition presents unique samples of the lettering arts, the world masterpieces created by recognized calligraphy masters. The exhibiting items include refined specimens of Slavonic and European lettering, the elegant works of the Jewish and Arabian calligraphy schools, strict forms of classical Japanese calligraphy, the examples of ancient Chinese writing, telling the history of its origination and demonstrating new aspects of visual arts, as well as Russian and foreign books on art of calligraphy, the rare hand-written editions, writing utensils of the past and the present.

After the International exhibition of calligraphy was held on September in St.Petersburg the museum exposition was enriched five times more.

In autumn the collection was enriched by a real pearl — the Hand-written Constitution of the Russian Federation created by the National Union of Calligraphers. The visitors have also a chance to enjoy the calligraphy works made by the students of the famous masters — the young men who’ve just started their way in calligraphy.

Contemporary museum of calligraphy combines painting and graphics, and solves the problem of culture and leisure matching; it answers the question of where to go in Moscow and what art galleries and museums to visit. The museum exposition will excite both children and adults and make a fine addition to school and university curriculum. As for the students of art schools and colleges, it will be a demonstrative example for a sequence of lectures and will reveal the essence of visual art and painting techniques of the artists described in books on art.

Museum hosts workshop classes of Russian and foreign calligraphers regularly

The Museum is located in the Sokolniki culture and recreation park. See the museum schedule, current events guide and detailed location map at the Web-site.
