Calligraphy is the art of fashion

It’s not a secret that calligraphy, by definition, has always been up-market. In ancient times anyone but stock-farmers or plowmen enjoyed it. This art held only corps d’elite.

The well-known society lady and politician, Irina Khakamada has been already taking calligraphy lessons for a year, after she wrote her surname with a brush in a live NTV broadcast for the first time ever. And calligraphy became a real hobby for her.

A living classic of national literature, the St. Petersburg writer Daniil Granin said that he prefers to write by hand. “I write by hand because I am pleased that between me and the word there is a pen, as a maximum. This allows me to feel the word better”, said Mr. Granin. The writer also notes that people have stopped writing letters by hand, although many of the earlier letters were often works of art and calligraphy. “Calligraphy was a great art, just a beautiful letter that was nice to be sent or received. And not printed, and even replicated on any copier. The beautiful letter written by hand... Now I have, for example, letters of Dmitry Likhachev — it’s lovely”, says the writer.

The head of Apple Inc, Billionaire Steve Jobs who invented the computer mouse, iPhone and many other gadgets that have become symbols of the digital era, has been enjoying philosophy and calligraphy more than 30 years.

In his speech in Cairo, the USA President, Barack Obama mentioned the art of calligraphy as a component of the world’s cultural heritage.

A few days ago Russian President, Dmitry Medvedev during an interview with state television of China was donated a calligraphy scroll of a famous Chinese masters. “I really like the works of Chinese art, including calligraphy”, said the President of Russia.
