MVK and Contemporary museum of calligraphy hosted a participant of the American National Exhibition 1959 held in Sokolniki

July 27, 2009

On July 24, 2009 management of the Contemporary museum of calligraphy met with a participant of the American National Exhibition held in Moscow’s Sokolniki exhibition centre in 1959.

We met with Khrushchev’s personal interpreter Yury Lepanov. Together with the USSR delegation Mr Lepanov visited the opening ceremony of the National American Exhibition on July 24, 2009. He recalled many interesting stories and details of that past show, and by the way commented on the legendary “kitchen debate” between the First Secretary CPSU Central Committee Nikita Khrushchev and American President-to-be Richard Nixon.

Yury Lepanov admired calligraphy art pieces created by Russian and American artists and promised to visit the II International exhibition of calligraphy to be held from October 14 to November 14, 2009 at Sokolniki.

During the meeting we accompanied Mr Lepanov to Pavilion 2 of CEC Sokolniki where the well-know exhibition of 1959 was held.

The American National Exhibit was seen in the summer of 1959, in Moscow.
The exhibit was sponsored by the American government, and it followed a similar Soviet Exhibit in New York City earlier that year. It featured many displays of the latest "home appliances, fashions, television and hi-fi sets. It was intended to narrow the gap between the Americans and the Soviets and improve the political relations between them.
Since that time Sokolniki has been a major venue for international exhibitions.
MVK International exhibition company is honored to keep these good tradition.
